E-Cigarettes Can Reduce The Harm To Oral Cavity

Recently, a number of scientific journals including "Nature" published articles. They argued that for patients with periodontal health, e-cigarettes may be a safer alternative to nicotine. Because they reduce the risk of oral cancer. Research published in "IGPH" (International Journal of Public Health). Showing that compared with combustible cigarettes, e-cigarettes have no obvious impact on lung health in the short term. And it will not impair lung function.

With the increasing number of e-cigarette users, research on its impact on human health has been furthered. "Nature" disclosed a recent review article. It pointed out that e-cigarettes may be safer than combustible cigarettes in terms of periodontal health.

The review article was jointly published by the Royal Cornwall Hospital and the Qatar University School of Dental Medicine. The meta-analysis method sorted out and compared the 279 research reports screened out. That included 170 non-smokers, 176 smokers, and 166 e-cigarette users.

Periodontal PD (depth of probing) and PI (plaque index) were significantly worse in smokers compared to non-smokers and e-cigarette users, found the analysis. For people with periodontal health risks, it will be safer to smoke e-cigarettes instead of traditional cigarettes.

A Filipino dental expert also urged smokers to switch to vaping or HTP products. Because they can minimize the risk of oral cancer.

The recommendation for turning to e-cigarettes to improve oral health is supported by relevant data. In 2017, a study was published in NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information). Comparing the oral health status of 110 users who had just switched to e-cigarettes, it found that for participants in both groups, 92 percent, and 98 percent, respectively, did not experience further gum bleeding.

Another article published in IGPH (Global Journal of Public Health) showed that short-term use of e-cigarettes did not significantly affect lung function compared with non-vaping.

Researchers performed a literature analysis in virtue of a systematic review and meta-analysis using keyword searches from four databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane). From rigorous screening, data extraction, literature quality assessment, and statistical analysis, the final evaluation results showed that short-term use of e-cigarettes had no significant impact on lung function compared with combustible cigarette users.

After smoking e-cigarettes for 1 month and 3 months, there were no significant changes in FVC (forced vital capacity), FEV1 (Forced expiratory volume in one second), PEF (Peak Expiratory Flow), and other indicators.

Researchers also found no difference in the effects on lung ventilation, and lung diffusing capacity. And flow resistance after individuals switched to e-cigarettes. While it's not directly proven that e-cigarettes are effective in quitting smoking, lung function may even improve after switching to e-cigarettes.

The findings are consistent with those of a long-term study that showed no deterioration in lung function after switching to vaping. In contrast, the impact of long-term e-cigarette use on lung function deserves more in-depth clinical observation. Researchers said that required additional longitudinal studies.
